Open House

Spent the summers in the forest
Baking hearts under the sun
You inside a sundress made in 1951
Spent the evenings by the fire
Built with beach wood and the brush
Some paper soaked in kerosene, a birdhouse that we crushed
You said to sit with you atop the hill, glad I was on your team
With 50 stains from dandelions yellowing my jeans
Alone at last at least just for the rest of afternoon
And we’d head back with headlights on pointed straight to the moon
Spent the winters wrapped in blankets
Watched the freeze cover the panes
Living off of leftovers and focusing on Maine
Watched our things begin to pile up, collecting hand me downs and trash
Warming up with liquor just to save a little cash
You said that you could get real used to this, let’s find an open house
Renovate some shit hole and pretend we bought it out
You said you’d take the garden and I could take the shed
And we would finally have a place we both could lay our heads

Anchors

All that fog has blown away
With those violent winds
But I never got to say
What a dick I’ve been
I walk across the lifeless road
The desert that’s 44
By fossils of my youthful little life
Past the liquor store
And I feel much older now, there are lines across my face
And they’re permanent and deep
For your hands to learn to trace
Do you remember it was just me and you and Gray’s Beach?
It was August back then and I told you I’d probably never see you again but here we are
And it’s been a long time, you know
It’s been too long in fact
And that eternal summer is winding down
But I’ve felt so alone
It’s no fault of anyone’s
And that lighthouse light keeps turning
onto anchors in the mud
Well if you ever need to see me again, you know where to find me
It’s where I’ve always been, and it’s where I’ll always be
And I know you got your own thing going on with the kids and the whole nine yards and they're beautiful
But that’s just not how I turned out

We chewed through peach pits
Crushed apricots down
In cocktails on Whalers
Round Nantucket Sound
But frost consumed New England
Your summer birds had headed west
And when they flew I felt that cattle prod
Go through the center of my chest
How do you sleep at night
Knowing somebody is waiting for you
I’ll trip again, yeah I know it’s true
Can you feel it turning too
Though we both wrinkle around the mouth
I have beat the runout groove
So I won’t hear nothing
When you call my name
These seasonal heartstrings
Like a kite flown through the bay
So tell me baby
How do you sleep at night
Knowing somebody is waiting for you

The Kid

I can still see you
A swirl of yellow sparks inside the fire
I’ve been such a mess, lord
Saw on your nightstand that pack of cigarettes
My voice shakes through the middle of the woods
Through the hallway and straight up to your room
My voice shakes through the middle of the woods
Through the hallway and straight up to your room, lord
Through the hallway and straight up to your room
I can still see you
A stroke of violet splits the setting sun
We’ve been missing you, kid
Heard your laughter roll like thunder in the storm
My voice shakes through the middle of the woods
Through the hallway and straight up to your room
My voice shakes through the middle of the woods
Through the hallway and straight up to your room, lord
Through the hallway and straight up to your room
Well I went blind
That river it ran wild
We need time, more time
But the days keep passing by
And I said
‘My friend, this is not the end
My friend, until we meet again’

Emily

Oh when I’m gone, will you long for me
Will you cry all night or just fall asleep
I walked past those dim lit lights
Walked for 30 miles to your door
And nothing will pull me away
Don’t care what you say, I’ll be here forever
And there were times I felt like your prize
We would compromise and melt by the fire
But you know well, you can carve me up
Like skates on ice, across a frozen river
But bogs will thaw, flowers will still bloom
We’ll shed our layers and prepare for summer
But everybody’s on something
I need someone to dig me out
Someone to dig me out of these bone rattling winters
God damn

Neighborhood

Take a walk through the blizzard
Through the Parliament clouds
Hit a bullseye at midnight
And crawl back to the compound
As you swim through the neon
With High Life and the wings
Press your nose to the storefront
Let me see if I can pull some strings
So grab a booth in the corner
Spill a pitcher or two
Pass the building that burned down
And the power line shoes
I’m getting tired of winter
And the frost on my lungs
I’m getting sick of the cycle
But the bar here is too good to run
This parlor has no thrones
My house is your home
Bet against all the loans
In a buffalo rodeo
This parlor has no thrones
My house is your home
Bet against all the loans
In a buffalo rodeo
